The Ultimate Rejection

What Do You Exhibit When the Artist Is Gone?
An anonymous dossier arrived at the Museum of Modern Art, Department of Rejected Artists. On its cover were three words: “The Ultimate Rejection.” Inside was a short message: “I believe you will understand.”
The dossier tells the story of a recluse who spent years making art that nobody wanted. The art world rejected his work—and ultimately, the artist himself.
Eventually, he gave up trying. For his final artwork, he decided to carry that rejection to its ultimate conclusion. He would reject not only his own art but also his own identity.
He burned every artwork, emptied his studio and destroyed every photograph of himself. He then hacked official databases and erased every official record of his existence.
Only the dossier survived because he intended it to. It documents every stage of his disappearance and was deliberately sent to the one museum he believed would understand.
Artist unknown, “The Ultimate Rejection”, date unknown. Anonymous dossier. Museum of Modern Art, Department of Rejected Artists. Deposited anonymously. ©️ No known claimant.
