Can a Skull Still Say Something New?
Max Richter is an emerging artist from Berlin, known for his intense ink drawings exploring the stark realities of life and death. His work combines meticulous detail with imagery often associated with horror, forcing viewers to confront subjects that contemporary life prefers to keep hidden.
In “The Last Hour”, a skull rests beside a closed book and ticking clock, while a barren tree rises behind them. These familiar symbols of mortality remind us that knowledge has limits, time cannot be stopped and every life eventually reaches its final page.
Critics have dismissed the work as gothic illustration, arguing that Richter relies on familiar symbols and dramatic imagery rather than subtle artistic ideas.
